English 8 VOCABULARY Assignments & Quizzes

OBJECTIVES:

  1. In each half-unit, students must define the assigned vocabulary words, spell words correctly five times, and craft an original sentence with each word. Sentences should contain context clues to assist a reader unfamiliar with the vocabulary word in determining the meaning of the word (we have continually done examples of this in class).

  2. For each unit, students must complete Vocabulary Workshop text activities Completing the Sentence, Synonyms, Antonyms, and Choosing the Right Word. These activities are to be completed by Wednesday of the week of completion of part 1 (above) for both halves of the given unit. Activities are to be completed in the vocabulary text.

  3. After every three vocabulary units there will be a comprehensive review. Students will complete Review Unit activities Vocabulary for Comprehension, Grammar in Context, Two-Word Completions, Choosing the Right Meaning, Antonyms, Word Families, Word Associations, and Building With Classical Roots. Activities are to be completed in the vocabulary text.
QUIZZES:

In each half-unit,students will be given a quiz wherein they are expected to show mastery of the spelling of all associated words from the unit, match definitions to the correct word, and complete a sentence containing context clues with the words in question. Some words may need to be altered to suit the given sentence; e.g. a verb may need to be changed to agree with the subject of a particular sentence.

Quiz grades will include:
  • 10 points for spelling
  • 10 points for defining
  • 20 points for sentence completion
  • 10 points for weekly homework completion
  • 10 points for unit activity completion (when applicable - every other week)
  • 10 points for the weekly Journal entry
  • 10 points for weekly Word of the Day activities
  •  08 points for weekly Word of the Day spelling
Quizzes will also include, when applicable, questions (multiple choice, true-false, completion, and/or essay) related to unit topics at hand.
